Member Biographies

In Arthur Skinner's history of the City of Birmingham Rifle Club of 1987 he made special mention of a number of members on which the following are based together with some later additions.

J. Allen.
John was a member of the Club's National League and Any Sights Teams for five years up to 1987.  In 1983 and 1984 he helped the club to set new Any Sights National and Iron Sights Team records.
He was an England International Shooter and shot at Bisley in club and Warwickshire County Teams.

T.H. Ball.
Terry joined the club in 1962 and shared with his wife, Irene, carried out the duties of club Treasurer for many years.  Both shot in club teams and were particularly successful in the Any Sight National League.  Both were regular attendants at the N.S.R.A. Bisley and Scottish Meetings and Terry won the Class "B" aggregate at the 1978 Scottish Meeting at Inverness.  For many years Irene organised the Annual Club Dinners and the Belbir Match Dinners.  Terry designed and built the very successful 50 yard and 50 metre interchangeable target frames at the Witton Ranges and continued to put his carpentry skills to the service of the club.
Terry shot for Staffordshire in the winning Queen Alexandra Team Cup at Bisley in 1971 but now resides in Warwickshire.  Terry and Irene resigned from the Club at the end of the summer season of 2013 at the Annual General Meeting.

R. Bruce. 
Bob was an active shooting member of the club from its foundation and was Captain in 1946.  He shot for Great Britain in each of the Dewar Team Matches in 1947 to 1950 and became winning Captain in 1963 to 1966 inclusive.  He was the Founder Chairman of the "Perryman 1965 Club" and Head of the Centipede Club from 1970 to 1979 having been elected in 1946.
In 1969 he was Captain of Britain's Roberts Trophy Team versus the U.S.A. held at Bisley.  As well as being Warwickshire County Secretary and Captain for many years he served on the N.S.R.A. Council as an administrative member.
He was Chairman of the club for a number of its most successful years and was a member of the British record making Any Sights Team which scored 1,999 ex 2,000 in 1949.  His last shot at Bisley in 1979.

V. Clifford.
Vincent was an active and shot in club teams in the 1946/50 period after which he became a committee member.  On Saturday afternoons he never missed attending at the range to carry out range officer, target issue and witnessing duties.  He always scored the cards during Club Field Days and later became a Vice President of the club.  Vincent was also an officer of the Staffordshire Small-bore Rifle Association.

W.E. Coffey.
Bill shot in club teams and regularly attended the Bisley and Scottish National Meetings.  Following the 1988 Scottish at Wick he so liked the area that he moved there.  Prior to this he served as Match Secretary, Assistant Secretary and later Club Secretary.

S.W. Curzons.
Stan shot regularly for the Club's National and Any Sights Teams for many years, travelling each week from Coventry.  He represented the Club and the County of Warwickshire on many occasions at Bisley and was in the Winning 1971 Astor Team.  In 2012 he won the Class "B" Aggregate at the Warwickshire Open Meeting at the age of 83 representing G.E.C. Coventry. 

Mrs. I. Daw.
Irene was Bisley Open Meeting Women's Champion in 1979 and was the Annie Oakley Cup winner at Bisley in 1982 when she also came fourth in the Robert's Final.  She was Women's 3- Positional Champion at Bisley in 1983.  She was an English International shooter in 1971,  1976,  1982 and 1983, and a Randle Team Member in 1982.
Irene shot in 3-Positional Standard Rifle and 10 Metre Air Rifle events in the 1982 World Championships and the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.  She also shot in the 1983 World Air Weapons events at Innsbruck and Zurich and the 1986 Crossbow event at Sulgen.
She served as Club Captain for two years and founded the Club's Air Weapons Section which she ran with the assistance of her husband Ted who also coached and acted as witness for match cards and was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1990. On retirement Irene moved to Mablethorpe where she became a Town Councillor. 

W.B. Godwin.
Bill was an active member of the club also since its foundation and was Club Captain for most of its successful twenty year period..  He was County Secretary for Staffordshire from 1954 to 1981 and represented the County on the N.S.R.A. Council.  He became a Vice President N.S.R.A. in in May 1983 and was a member of the successful club teams between 1947 and 1969.
Bill won the British Long Range Individual Championship in 1952 and shot in the Dewar Team Match many times and was Captain for three years in 1973 to 1975.
He shot in the Olympic Games and World Championships and was a member of the 1953 Pershing Team.  Bill was a many times English International and Club Champion four times. He was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1948.

Arthur C. Hale.
Arthur shot in club teams from 1937 to 1939.  He won the Kings Prize in 1926 and shot in the Dewar Matches of 1927, 1928 and 1932.  He became Club Chairman in 1948 and guided the club in early post war years.  He was a Vice President of the club and died in late 1982.

Alfred C. Hale.
Alfred shot in club teams from 1947 to 1950 including the winning National League "A" Team during the same period.  He won the Club Championship in 1948.  He was an English International and shot in the Dewar Team at Witton in 1949.  To Arthur Skinner's knowledge he was the only successful .22 calibre shooter to use a blade foresight indoors and outdoors.

John Hall.
John was another of the founder members of the club and Hon. Secretary for a number of years in the 1950's.  He was club champion on four occasions and a member of the Dewar Team for 18 years.  He was British Long Range Champion in 1951 and 1963 and many times an English International being Captain in 1963.  He was a member of all the successful teams from 1946 to his retirement in 1967.
John was a member of three Pershing Trophy Teams and shot for Great Britain in the Tokyo Olympics of 1964.  He also shot in European and three World Championships. 
He was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1946. 
John died in February 1986 at the age of 79.

H.H. Izon.
Howard shot in club teams for many years.  He was an active Committee Member and a clubVice President until hi death.  He served as Warwickshire Rifle Captain for many years.

F. Jennings.
Fred was at one time Rifle Captain and is currently Chairman.  He was a member of the record scoring National League "A" Team and was a Dewar and English International Team  member.  He was the Warwickshire representative on the N.S.R.A. Council and currently represents Staffordshire.  He was elected to the Board of Management in 1986 and served on its Rifle, Airgun and Match Crossbow Committees. He was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1983.
In 2010 Fred was awarded the NSRA Gold Award for his Special Services to Shooting. The medal and certificate were presented by the Staffordshire  President, Major (retired) Peter Martin M.B.E. at their 2011 Annual General Meeting.
The photograph below shows Fred  receiving his awards at the presentation held at the Rugeley Rifle Club.
Fred died on the 18th of October 2015.

Dr. Marion Jurek.
Marion was a pre-war Polish World Rifle Champion who came to Great Britain in 1939.  He started Pistol and
3-Positions shooting at the club so effectively that both J.D. Smith and P.G. Whatley became British Internationals.

W.E. Keen.
Bill joined the club in the mid 1950's and became Hon. Secretary of the Warwickshire Small-bore Rifle Association which promoted the Midland's Indoor Bisley, held at Bingley Hall, on three occasions in the 1960's.  For seven consecutive years, 1958 to 1964, he shot in the Dewar Match and was an England International.  In 1961 he was Captain of the Great Britain Pershing Team in the U.S.A.  Bill helped to win many Club and County Team events and was active in the promotion of shooting for over ten years.  He died in February, 1982.

T.J. Knight.
Tom, was 80 years old at the time of the Club's Golden Jubilee in 1987 and retired from shooting in 1967.  He was three times Club Champion and won the British Long Range Individual Championship in 1958.  Up to 1987 he was the only British shooter to have won the Bisley Aggregate three times, in 1951, 1959 and 1962.
He shot in the Dewar Team 14 times and in the Pershing Trophy Team a record four times.  He was a regular member of the Club's "A" Team that won 17 consecutive National League Championships in the course of which 5 British Team record scores were made.  Tom shot for England 25 times and was Captain at Bisley in 1967.

J.E. Leggett.
Jim joined the club in 1950 and soon shot his way into its "A" Team.  He was a member of the World Record making Iron Sights Team which scored 1,999 ex 2,000.  He won the British Long Range Individual and English Trophies at Bisley in 1953.  In that year he also shot in the British Pershing Trophy and Dewar Teams, shooting for England in 1951 and 1953.  He was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1952.  In later years he concentrated on full-bore shooting.

Major (retired) Peter Martin M.B.E.
Peter was an active shooting member of several civilian rifle clubs in the areas in which he was stationed and joined the City of Birmingham in 1981 where he is a member of the Club's "A" team.  He has shot in English International Teams four times.
His work for target shooting in the army was recognized by the award of the M.B.E. in 1982.  He was Captain of Army Teams in 1971 to 1982 and Captain of the Combined Services Teams in 1976 to 1982.  Peter has been the Army Long Range Champion, winner of the Combined Services Wilkinson Sword Trophy in 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1986 and holds the Championship record of 792 ex 800.
Peter shot for Great Britain in the Dewar Team in 1966 and 1969, and on three other occasions including 1981 in which year he also represented Great Britain in the Pershing Trophy Match in the U.S.A. by shooting a full score of 400.  In 1989 he was Captain of the Pershing Team.  In 1981 Peter won the British and English Long Range Championship at Bisley and in 1982 he shot in the World Championships.
 He was Club Champion in 1982, 1983, 1984, 1990, 1995, 2003, 2010 and 2011 and International Team Member, he was Adjutant for the 1984 to 1986 Dewar Teams and the British Roberts Trophy Match at Bisley in 1985 and was Captain of the 1987 Dewar Team.  He won the Grand Aggregate at both of the 1984 and 1985 National Scottish Meetings.  Peter is currently President of the Staffordshire Small-bore Rifle Association and Patron of the City of Birmingham Rifle Club. He was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1987. Peter died Saturday 6th. October 2018.

John Payne.
Was introduced to 3-Positional and Air Rifle shooting by Pat Whatley, and became the Warwickshire Organizer for these competitions, before moving on to be elected as Warwickshire County Chairman.  Shot in several Great Britain International  3-Positional Rifle teams, and European Air Rifle Championships held in Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.  Represented Great Britain in International matches at Denmark, Norway, Romania and South Africa.  Was Adjutant to the British Team for the European Championships at Suhl East Germany in 1971.   He later became a National 3-Positional Coach. 

Marion Payne.
Marion and her husband John were members of the club from about 1960 until they moved to the Isle of Man in 1980.  Marion shot for the Ladies England teams at Scottish meetings, and shot for several years in the Great Britain team for the Randle Trophy including the team’s first win in 1966. Also represented Great Britain Internationally in Switzerland, shooting both Air Rifle and 3-Positional Rifle.  She was also a member of the 400 Club. 

C.K. Pitt.
Ken became a keen .22 Rifle Shooter during the 1939/45 War in which he served as a Major in the Sutton Coldfield Home Guard.  He was an active member of the club from 1946 onwards and scored several 400's in the club's National League Teams.  He was a regular attender at Bisley and shot in Club and County Teams on many occasions.  Illness caused curtailment of his shooting but he continued for many years with administration and statistical duties.
Ken became a Vice President of the club, a Founder Member of the Sutton Coldfield Rifle Club and was also Warwickshire County Captain.  Ken died in 1982.

Arnold and Betty Sills.
Up to Arnold's death in April 2007 both were regular shooting members of the club and regular attenders at the Bisley and Scottish Meetings.  Arnold was Captain of Warwickshire for several years and organised its Championship Open Rifle Meeting at the Witton Ranges.  Betty continues to shoot for the club in N.S.R.A. National League Teams and attend the Scottish Meetings and has shot for England.  She was Warwickshire Ladies Captain and Treasurer and is currently Warwickshire County Association Secretary. 

A.D. Skinner.
Arthur joined the club in 1946 and subsequently shot in 24 winning National League Division one Teams and 26 Any Sights Division one winning Teams.  He was Club Champion eight times and won the British Long Range Individual Championship at Bisley in 1959 and 1960.   He also shot at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the 1962 World Championships, the 1963 European Championships and won the Bisley Aggregate in 1960.  Fifteen times a British Dewar Team shooting member he was Captain in 1982 and 1983.  In 1954 he won the English Short Range Championship.
Arthur shot for England 27 times between 1949 and 1984 and was Captain in 1971 and 1976.  He won three Scottish Meeting Aggregates in 1952, 1961 and 1963.  He shot in both Pershing Trophy and Field Marshall Earl Roberts Trophy Teams in 1961 and 1969 respectively and was Adjutant of the 1981 Pershing team at Camp Perry.  For 14 years he was Captain of the Kynoch Rifle Club and was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1963.
He was a shooting member of seven British record making teams including the World Record National League Team in 1953 and in the Any Sights Team which set a new record of 1,992 ex 2,000 in 1983.
Arthur was Chairman of the "Perrymen 1965" Club and was presented with the N.S.R.A. Special Silver Award in 1981.  He was a Vice President of the City of Birmingham Rifle Club.

J.D. Smith.
For over 26 years John was the Club Statistical Officer until he retired from shooting in 1979 and was Membership Officer from 1947 to 1978 inclusive.  He shot in many successful Club and County Teams in the 1950's, 60's and 70's, winning the Club Championship in 1968.  John shot five times in the Dewar Team between 1959 and 1968 and in English International Matches on three occasions.  He also shot in three British 3-Position Teams.  He served as Club Auditor and was Warwickshire Rifle Captain in 1971 and 1972.  John attended Bisley each year from 1948 to 1980 and shot in winning Queen Alexandra Teams for Warwickshire in 1956 and 1957.  He was elected a Vice President of the Club 1978.

E.A. Spiriti.
Ernesto (Ernie) won the Bisley Aggregate in 1950 and joined the club in the early 1960's.  He was a member of the winning Any Sights Team for 16 seasons and the winning National League Team 12 times.  He was club Champion on three occasions and was at various times Club Captain, Club Chairman and lastly a Vice President. He was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1968.
He represented Warwickshire on the N.S.R.A. Council and was awarded the N.S.R.A. Special Silver Award in 1975 and the Gold Award in 1979.  He was Vice Chaiman of the N.S.R.A. Council from April 1980 to his retirement from office in 1986.
Ernie shot for England many times and was Captain of its International Teams four times both at Bisley and Scotland.  He first shot for Great Britain in the Dewar Match of 1952 and subsequently five times between 1957 and 1964.  He was British National Coach for many years, coaching English and Britisn Teams.  He was a member of the N.S.R.A. Rifle Committee and of its Panel of Referees.

Margaret Spiriti.
Margaret was Club Secretary for many years in the 1960's and on her retirement from the post was presented with a gold bracelet by the club.  She shot for Great Britain in the Randle Trophy Team in 1960 and in English Ladies' International Matches.  She was a regular supporter of the club in both shooting and social events for over 40 years and was made Vice President in 1981. 

R.A. Stevenson.
Roy followed  David Winch as Secretary and shot in club teams for 10 years.  He was the organizer of the early and several subsequent exchange visits by the De Geuzen Club of Gent, now referred to as the Belbir Match.  Roy represented Eley at N.S.R.A. meetings and was in their European Sales Department.

Arthur Traies.
As mentioned in the club history Arthur was instrumental in founding the club in 1937.  He was British Long Range Champion in 1928 and won the European Championship in 1929. He then shot in the World Championships in 1937 and the Pershing Trophy Match in the same year.  After shooting in the British Dewar Team on seven occasions he became its Captain in 1949 and 1950.
From 1937 he undertook committee and administrative responsibilities at the N.S.R.A.   In 1947 he became the Warwickshire County Secretary and Representative on the N.S.R.A. Council relinquishing the latter in 1962 to become Chairman, a position which he held until his death in 1966.
Arthur was Head of the Centipede Club from 1960 to 1965 having been elected in 1924 and Tail from 1948.

A.G. Walmesley.
Tony was a club member from 1949 and represented Great Britain four times in the Dewar Team Match between 1959 and 1965 and subsequently a regular coach to the team.  He shot in the 1965 Pershing Trophy Team and coached the 1973 and 1981 Teams.  In 1977 and 1985 he coached the Robert Trophy Team at Bisley.  He shot for England many times and was twice Captain of its International Team.  Tony was appointed Adjutant to the 1987 Dewar Team.  He was elected as a member of the Board of Management of the N.S.R.A. and of its Rifle Committee and in 1983 was elected a member of the Centipede Club.

E.P. Watson.
Ted was British and English Short Range Champion in 1971 and 1985 and in his nine appearances in the final stage of the Roberts at Bisley he was English Long Range Champion in 1979 and British and English Long Range Champion in 1985.  Many times a Dewar Team member he was Adjutant in 1981 and 1982 and Captain in 1983, 1984 and 1985.  In 1985 he was Captain of the British Roberts Trophy Team at Bisley where the U.S.A. won by only one point.
In 1973 he was a member of the Great Britain Pershing Team at Camp Perry and won the 100 yards Any Sights Match, in 1979 he was the Great Britain representative in the 50 metre Prone Match in the U.S.S.R. International and  in 1980 he won the Bronze Medal at the French International held in Paris.   Also in 1980 he was leading the trials to shoot in the Moscow Olympics but the games were  subsequently boycotted by the N.S.R.A.
Ted won the Scottish Open Meeting Aggregate in 1975 and the Daily Mail Trophy in 1977.  He was in the English Team of ten on nine occasions.  He was elected a member of the Centipede Club in 1981.
Ted joined the City of Birmingham in 1954 and was eighteen times in a winning National League Team (10 in Division 1) and twelve times in an Any Sights League winning team including one record team score.  He was also in the Metric and 50 metre League Teams, he was Club Champion twenty times and shot in Warwickshire Teams on a great number of occasions.
Ted was Chairman of the Sutton Coldfield Rifle Club for a number of years and was President and Life Member of the City of Birmingham Rifle Club. 
Ted died on the 18th. June 2015 one month prior to his 80th. birthday.

P.G. Whatley.
Pat shot in the club's National League Teams in the 1950's and in the 1956 Dewar.  He was a 3-Positional International and was also an International Pistol Shot.

J. Wilkins.
Jim served the club as Range Warden and Witness from 1949 onwards.  He was an Accuracy Tester in the .22 Calibre Proof Department at the local I.M.I. Eley Works and retired in 1981.  Jim continued to assist at the club for a number of years after his retirement.

D.J.B. Winch.
David followed Margaret Spiriti as Club  Secretary for several years including the period when the new Club House was built.  He shot for Great Britain in the Dewar Match of 1968 and the Pilzen European Championships in 1969.  Since settling in the Dundee area his son Gordon has won the Haig Long Range Scottish Championship and the class X aggregate at the 1986 St Andrews Scottish Meeting.
